HOW BETH CREATES ART
Beth's paintings are about capturing the essence of something, rather than an exact likeness. She takes photos to help soak up a sense of the place and recall what was exciting about it, whether local scenes or travels in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Then she uses energetic strokes and expressive color to set a mood. Her paintings are deliberately interpretive, rather than strictly realistic, to create a more intriguing version of reality. Beth wants to show how it felt to see what she saw, so that viewers can enjoy an emotional reaction to the scene.

Beth rarely draws before painting, preferring to work intuitively with color instead. She paints directly on the surface with buttery soft pastel sticks of intense, pure pigment - no brush, no blending, no interference at all. Rather than use black and brown for dark areas, or white for light ones, Beth achieves vibrant light and dark areas in her paintings by placing many colors next to and over each other. Beth paints with excitement and immediacy, to communicate her experiences to viewers.
