The vitality of a city – intriguing alleyways, busy cafes, live theater, impressive architecture – has always excited me. The perfect balance for me is splitting my time between a city pied-a-terre and a shoreline home. Traveling through the old cities of Europe and South America, attending a parade, or sitting in a café people-watching energizes me and makes me want to paint.

Cityscapes
My theory is that there are mountain, desert and water people – and I’m definitely the latter. Being lucky enough to live on the ocean and to have traveled to many waterfront cities, inspiration is usually nearby. Colors reflected in the water by sunsets, boats, or buildings make me want to share the water’s impact, whether soothing or awe-inspiring, through my paintings.

Seascapes
Landscape and still life paintings have long traditions, but “still” is really not my style. To make them interesting for me to paint, I add my own twist. Sometimes a favorite park, autumn leaves, or contrasting colors in a fruit bowl inspire me, or it might be the moment right before something, or someone, moves that makes it exciting.

Still-ish Life
Fruit, vegetables, bowls, bottles and vases of flowers are common painting subjects, so I need a personal twist to get inspired by these subjects and take them beyond the mundane. That involves giving them intense color and a bit of attitude. Usually it’s also about food and sharing happiness, as you can frequently tell from the titles of these paintings.

The Produce Aisle
Seeing and experiencing new places always feeds my creative juices. Whether traveling at home, or in Latin America and Europe, I need to immerse myself. Walking for hours and taking hundreds of photos helps me get a feel for the place. Only then am I up to the task of capturing its unique energy to communicate it in a painting. My goal is to share what it felt like to be there.
